Short answer. Your ad platforms cannot see a sale that closes on the phone, so the link has to come from your side. Record where every lead came from the moment it enters your CRM, mark which leads become sales, and read your closed sales against that origin next to your ad data. That shows you which campaigns produce buyers, not just calls and form fills.
Because they stop at the lead. They count the click, the form, sometimes the call. The sale happens later, in a conversation or a meeting, often weeks later, and none of that reaches the ad platform unless you send it back. So the platform optimizes for leads, and it has no way to tell a lead that buys from a lead that never answers the phone.
There are three, from the simplest to the most complete.
The CRM source field. It costs almost nothing, it works with whatever tools you already have, and it is enough to start moving budget toward what sells. The other two build on it: call tracking makes the origin more precise, and sending sales back to the platforms lets the algorithms work for you. Neither is useful if your CRM does not already know which leads closed.
For a custom food truck manufacturer selling nationwide, we used the first method only. Every sale in the client’s CRM records the answer to “How did you hear about us”. We brought the sales, the Google Ads account and a CRM export together in one hub, and read each closed sale against its recorded origin. There was no call tracking and no import of offline conversions. That was enough to move the budget to the channels and the states that actually produced buyers: the client went from 200K to 1.3M a month in three months, on 30% less marketing spend. Tracking is one of the nine parts of a 360 marketing system.
