Short answer. Ask any agency you are considering to show you one real report where a closed sale, with its amount, is tied to the campaign that produced it. An agency that can track offline sales back to ads will tell you where the sale is recorded, who enters the origin, and how that origin gets back to the ad platform. If the answer stops at leads and cost per lead, the agency is not tracking your sales.
It means the sale that closes on the phone, in a showroom or at a signing carries the origin of the lead that started it. Ad platforms only see what happens online: the click and the form. The sale happens somewhere they cannot see, so the connection has to be built by recording the origin in your CRM and keeping it attached until the deal is closed. The method is laid out in How do I know which ad produced which sale when my sales close on the phone?
Sometimes not. A CRM field, a short question at the first call and a monthly look at closed sales by origin can be run in-house. An agency is useful when ads, website, follow-up and reporting are handled by different people and nobody owns the link between them. Part of the reason is that the platforms cannot see your CRM, which Why doesn’t Meta attribution work for my business? explains.
For a custom food truck manufacturer selling nationwide, each sale was matched to the origin recorded in the CRM, and the budget moved toward the channels that produced buyers. The client went from 200K to 1.3M a month in three months, on 30% less marketing spend. Read the full case study.
Tracking and reporting are two of the nine parts of a 360 marketing system.
Ask each agency to show a real report where closed sales, with amounts, are tied to campaigns, and to explain where the origin of each lead is recorded and who enters it.
A proposal that only reports leads and cost per lead, that cannot say where the data will live, or that shows a source for every single sale.
